WHERE DOES CINEMA EXIST?

With the postmodern atmosphere grounding its foundations into the very core of our infrastructure, our relationship with space has never been more vivid and complicated. City spaces have become fragmented within our perception, and so demanded a great deal of discovery and intervention. French sociologist Jean Baudrillard claimed in his book America that if we take a look around, we will find cinema all around us. The physical surroundings are immersed deeply within continuous narrative images and scenarios.

Whether it was Bazin, Deleuze, or any other theorist, I think we can claim that they, in addition to our own perceptive experiences, that cinema is a re-creation of our own real worlds. Some might refer to it as reality narrating itself within a certain time space. The medium has derived itself from the act of flânerie, a Situationist terminology referring to a person strolling around aimlessly - acting only as a spectator of the world surrounding him/her.

Odysseus, the legendary Greek hero who set out on an epic 10-year journey back home, is a name that has been associated with endless wanderings; an inspiration that is used in this blog to answer the question: Where does cinema exist? This blog can be taken from an architectural, urbanist, sociological, and even an artistic point of view. It will take us on a continuous cinematic exploration of our cities and societies - a journey of self-discovery.
